High summer on the Bahia coast: the beaches of Porto da Barra and Itapuã are full, the sun shines a lot and the sea is bath-warm. The city celebrates, from the New Year festivities to the February Carnival with street parades and trios elétricos. Accommodation is expensive and booked out early.
A procession of around seven kilometres runs from the Conceição da Praia church in the lower city to the Senhor do Bonfim church, led by hundreds of baianas who wash its steps with scented water. The festival blends Catholic devotion to Senhor do Bonfim with the Candomblé orixá Oxalá.
