Still off-season — flights and hotels significantly cheaper than in October.
September in Hong Kong is generally manageable, but with 11 rain days it's not a reliably sunny month. Better conditions can be found in April, October, and November.
Daytime highs reach 32°C (90°F) with a daily average of 29°C (84°F) — nights stay warm at 26°C (79°F). Peaks reach around 35°C (95°F), the coldest nights around 23°C (73°F). The sun shines an average of 7 hours per day; there are 11 rain days with 223 mm (8.8 in) total. The water is a warm 29°C (84°F) — perfect for snorkelling and swimming.
Sun protection, a hat, and plenty of water are essential at these temperatures. Plan activities for early morning or evening.
Hot, muggy and rainy: highs sit at 31 to 32°C (88 to 90°F), the nights stay warm and humidity climbs to 75 to 80 per cent. Thunderstorms and downpours roll through, and the typhoon season reaches its peak. In return the beaches on Lantau and the Outlying Islands are bath-warm, and air-conditioned museums and malls are in demand. In September (sometimes early October, depending on the lunar calendar) lanterns glow in the parks for the Mid-Autumn Festival.
Lanterns light up parks and promenades, above all at the big lantern carnival in Victoria Park. In Tai Hang a 67-metre (220-foot) fire dragon studded with thousands of incense sticks is carried through the streets.
