Spring arrives in waves: snowmelt swells the waterfalls, lambs stand in the paddocks, and the peaks often still hold snow while the first blossom appears below. The weather is changeable, but prices drop and the trails become more accessible week by week.
The marathon, half marathon and 10 km (6 mi) run follow lakeside paths and trails from the Arrowtown and Lake Hayes area to the finish in Queenstown. It is one of the region's biggest sporting events, and accommodation is tight that weekend.
