Post-season — prices falling after the travel period, beaches and attractions quieter.
May is the coldest winter month in New Zealand (Queenstown) — with highs of only 12°C (54°F), it holds little appeal for sun-seekers. Better travel in January, February, March, April, November, and December.
Temperatures reach a maximum of 12°C (54°F) during the day and drop to 2°C (36°F) at night — warm layers recommended. Peaks reach around 17°C (63°F), the coldest nights around -4°C (25°F) — frost does occur. With 4 sunshine hours per day and 8 rain days (72 mm (2.8 in)), this is one of the cloudier months.
Pack warm clothing and sturdy footwear. Cool temperatures make hiking and cultural trips enjoyable — beaches are off the agenda.
Autumn is the season of colour: poplars and maples turn Arrowtown and the lakeshore yellow and orange, the air is clear and the summer crowds are gone. From April there is frost at night, by May everything already looks greyer, and the lifts prepare for the winter season.
