The Philippines are a tropical archipelago of over 7,000 islands with a correspondingly diverse climate. Cebu and the Visayas region in the centre have a pronounced dry season from November to April and a rainy season from May to October. The coral reefs around Cebu and the nearby diving destination Moalboal are suitable for diving year-round.
The most important climate risk in the Philippines is typhoons: an average of 20 typhoons hit the archipelago every year, most of them from June to December. Cebu lies in a buffer zone and is less frequently hit directly than the northern islands, but indirect effects on weather and flight connections are possible.
The best travel time for Cebu and the surrounding area is December to May: dry weather, calm seas and ideal underwater visibility. In March, the famous whale shark encounters take place near Oslob — snorkellers get within a few metres of these gentle giants. Those who want to dive will find excellent conditions in Moalboal year-round.
