Deep off-season — very low prices, but weather conditions are suboptimal.
December is the coldest winter month in Norway (Fjord Norway) — with highs of only 6°C (43°F), it holds little appeal for sun-seekers. Better travel in May, June, July, August, and September.
Temperatures reach a maximum of 6°C (43°F) during the day and drop to 2°C (36°F) at night — warm layers recommended. Peaks reach around 10°C (50°F), the coldest nights around -5°C (23°F) — frost does occur. With 1 sunshine hour per day and 18 rain days (300 mm (11.8 in)), this is one of the cloudier months. At 9°C (48°F), the water is still quite cool in December — a wetsuit may be useful.
An umbrella or waterproof jacket is essential. On rainy days, plan indoor activities like museums and markets.
Dark, wet and surprisingly mild: in Bergen and along the fjords it rains on 14 to 18 days a month, and December barely sees an hour of sun. The lanes of Bryggen are empty, cafés and candlelight stand in for the view, and anyone who has come to hike is in the wrong place.
