Deep off-season — very low prices, but weather conditions are suboptimal.
March is the coldest winter month in Norway (Fjord Norway) — with highs of only 7°C (45°F), it holds little appeal for sun-seekers. Better travel in May, June, July, August, and September.
Temperatures reach a maximum of 7°C (45°F) during the day and drop to 2°C (36°F) at night — warm layers recommended. Peaks reach around 12°C (54°F), the coldest nights around -3°C (27°F) — frost does occur. With 4 sunshine hours per day and 14 rain days (179 mm (7.0 in)), this is one of the cloudier months. At 6°C (43°F), the water is still quite cool in March — a wetsuit may be useful.
Pack warm clothing and sturdy footwear. Cool temperatures make hiking and cultural trips enjoyable — beaches are off the agenda.
Dark, wet and surprisingly mild: in Bergen and along the fjords it rains on 14 to 18 days a month, and December barely sees an hour of sun. The lanes of Bryggen are empty, cafés and candlelight stand in for the view, and anyone who has come to hike is in the wrong place.
