Travel season — mid-range prices, good availability.
May is one of the best months to visit Norway (Fjord Norway) — with 7 sunshine hours per day and pleasant highs of 15°C (59°F).
Daytime highs average 15°C (59°F), cooling to 8°C (46°F) at night (daily average: 11°C (52°F)). Peaks reach around 24°C (75°F), the coldest nights around 1°C (34°F). The sun shines an average of 7 hours per day; there are 10 rain days with 100 mm (3.9 in) total. At 9°C (48°F), the water is still quite cool in May — a wetsuit may be useful.
Layer up — warm days and cool evenings alternate. Perfect timing for hikes and sightseeing.
Snowmelt sends the waterfalls roaring, the orchards in Hardanger are in blossom and the days lengthen fast. With six to seven hours of sunshine a day this is the most dependable time for fjord trips; up on the mountain passes some roads may still carry snow.
Norway's national day starts in Bergen with a gun salute at 7 am, followed by parades through the city centre. Unique to Bergen are the buekorps – drumming boys' brigades, a 19th-century tradition that has survived only here.
