Deep off-season — very low prices, but weather conditions are suboptimal.
January is the coldest winter month in Alaska (Juneau) — with highs of only 2°C (36°F), it holds little appeal for sun-seekers. Better travel in May, June, July, August, and September.
Temperatures reach a maximum of 2°C (36°F) during the day and drop to -2°C (28°F) at night — warm layers recommended. Peaks reach around 7°C (45°F), the coldest nights around -13°C (9°F) — frost does occur. With 1 sunshine hour per day and 16 rain days (176 mm (6.9 in)), this is one of the cloudier months. At 6°C (43°F), the water is still quite cool in January — a wetsuit may be useful.
An umbrella or waterproof jacket is essential. On rainy days, plan indoor activities like museums and markets.
The quiet season: the cruise ships are gone, days are short and the sky is mostly grey. Snow falls in the mountains, while in town wet weather alternates with frost. Visitors now see the Alaska of the locals, with winter sports, a chance of northern lights on clear nights and empty streets.
