Still off-season — flights and hotels significantly cheaper than in May.
April in Alaska (Juneau) is on the cool side — with highs around 9°C (48°F) it's less suited for a beach holiday, but good for sightseeing away from the high season.
Temperatures reach a maximum of 9°C (48°F) during the day and drop to 2°C (36°F) at night — warm layers recommended. Peaks reach around 15°C (59°F), the coldest nights around -3°C (27°F) — frost does occur. With 6 sunshine hours per day and 11 rain days (94 mm (3.7 in)), this is one of the cloudier months. At 6°C (43°F), the water is still quite cool in April — a wetsuit may be useful.
Pack warm clothing and sturdy footwear. Cool temperatures make hiking and cultural trips enjoyable — beaches are off the agenda.
The quiet season: the cruise ships are gone, days are short and the sky is mostly grey. Snow falls in the mountains, while in town wet weather alternates with frost. Visitors now see the Alaska of the locals, with winter sports, a chance of northern lights on clear nights and empty streets.
Since 1975, this free festival has turned downtown into one big week-long jam session with musicians from all over Alaska.
