Peak season — flights and hotels at their annual highest. Book early.
August is one of the best travel months for Alaska (Skagway) — conditions are stable, temperatures reach 17°C (63°F), and outdoor activities are excellent.
Daytime highs average 17°C (63°F), cooling to 12°C (54°F) at night (daily average: 14°C (57°F)). Peaks reach around 24°C (75°F), the coldest nights around 7°C (45°F). With 3 sunshine hours per day and 8 rain days (63 mm (2.5 in)), this is one of the cloudier months. At 13°C (55°F), the water is still quite cool in August — a wetsuit may be useful.
Layer up — warm days and cool evenings alternate. Perfect timing for hikes and sightseeing.
High season: the main street is full of cruise guests, and the gold-rush façades are among the most photographed sights on the Inside Passage. It is mild and mostly dry, though cloud comes more often than in spring. Early in the morning or in the evening the town belongs to the hikers.
