Post-season — prices falling after the travel period, beaches and attractions quieter.
October is the coldest winter month in Alaska (Skagway) — with highs of only 9°C (48°F), it holds little appeal for sun-seekers. Better travel in May, June, July, August, and September.
Temperatures reach a maximum of 9°C (48°F) during the day and drop to 5°C (41°F) at night — warm layers recommended. Peaks reach around 14°C (57°F), the coldest nights around -2°C (28°F) — frost does occur. With 2 sunshine hours per day and 10 rain days (98 mm (3.9 in)), this is one of the cloudier months. At 10°C (50°F), the water is still quite cool in October — a wetsuit may be useful.
Pack warm clothing and sturdy footwear. Cool temperatures make hiking and cultural trips enjoyable — beaches are off the agenda.
The rain returns, birches and poplars turn yellow and the last ships say goodbye. The train season ends and shops close one after another. Fresh snow soon dusts the peaks, and the air smells of autumn and damp wood.
