Still off-season — flights and hotels significantly cheaper than in May.
April in Alaska (Skagway) at 9°C (48°F) is too cool for a beach holiday, but suitable for sightseeing and hiking. The best travel months are May, June, July, August, and September.
Temperatures reach a maximum of 9°C (48°F) during the day and drop to 2°C (36°F) at night — warm layers recommended. Peaks reach around 16°C (61°F), the coldest nights around -4°C (25°F) — frost does occur. The sun shines an average of 7 hours per day; there are 5 rain days with 33 mm (1.3 in) total. At 4°C (39°F), the water is still quite cool in April — a wetsuit may be useful.
Pack warm clothing and sturdy footwear. Cool temperatures make hiking and cultural trips enjoyable — beaches are off the agenda.
Spring arrives dry and bright: in the rain shadow of the coastal mountains little rain falls, and the days lengthen quickly. The first ships dock, the White Pass & Yukon Route resumes service and the Chilkoot Trail begins to thaw. One of the best times for sunny days.
